Summer Reading Resources

HGF will be hosting a Summer Reading Lending Library run by our Reading Specialist Mrs. Rivard.  The program will allow K-2 students to borrow 'at level' books twice during the summer.  The kick off will be held from 3-4 on Wednesday, June 17 in Mrs. Rivard's classroom.  K-2 parent/guardians, look for a form to RSVP in your child's folder soon.

"The research is clear that children who don't read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect. There are lots of ways to keep your kids engaged with books this summer.  Here are a few resources:

Get summer started on the right page with an amazing collection of resources from PBS LearningMedia's new Summer of Reading collection! This special collection of videos, activities, and games helps to build vocabulary and reading comprehension while bringing storybook characters to life. The Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program marks its nineteenth year celebrating the power of books to expand children’s horizons. Onceagain, we’re partnering with educators like you to inspire readers in first through sixth grades to have a summer filled with reading adventures—and earn a FREE book too! Here's how:

• Step 1. Read any 8 books and record them in the Reading Journal (PDF).
• Step 2. Bring the completed Reading Journal to your local B&N store. Find a Store.
• Step 3. Choose a FREE BOOK from our selection on the Reading Journal list at the store... Enjoy reading!

Freshbrain.org offers an online summer camp focused on multi media development and production including application development, graphic design, music mixing, and robotics. Also, support and incentives for participants through virtual counselors and corporate sponsors. This site is geared towards teens and is free of charge.

• Exploratorium

Exploratorium is an virtual science center complete with exhibits, interactive tools and modules, as well as science projects to do at your site.
